The Mother and Children Art Project addresses mothers/female carers and children coming from a different ethnic and social background, inviting them through a series of workshops to explore their relationships through art and play and to discover their diversity and its value as a creative resource.
A group of professional artists will lead the workshops focusing on various art forms: visual arts, music, dance and movement and will offer opportunities to engage in couple and collective creations and play.
The focus of each session will be to explore and encourage connection through non verbal communications and non conventional means while having fun, in a relaxed and open group settings.
The project is born from the desire to create more opportunities for mothers/female carers to relate to their children, young or adult ones, with means other than language.
We all know how important non verbal communication is between a mother and a newborn baby. We communicate via touch, eye contact, sound other than words and movement.
But what happens once our children grow up and conventional language gets estabilished between the couple?
We understand that play is important for young children's healthy brain development.
It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them.
We believe that play is just as important for adults as it offers a sense of engagement and pleasure, takes the player out of a sense of time and place, and the experience of doing it is more important than the outcome."
Play is a basic human need as essential to our well-being as sleep, so when we're low on play, our minds and bodies notice. Over time, play deprivation can reveal itself in certain patterns of behaviour: We might get cranky, rigid, feel stuck in a rut or feel victimised by life. And this, of course, affects all our relationships, including the one with our children and/or our mothers.
Motherhood can be a quite isolating experience dictated by duties, responsibilities, schedules, routines, social and cultural expectations.
This is why we want to create a healthy, non judgemental and fun space for mothers to express themselves, connect with their children and other women.
Through play and creative expression we'll be looking at highlighting the common elements that connect each couple of mothers and children to the community and the differences that make them unique. To understand and confront daily realities of living together and to develop sustainable solutions through the values of creativity, solidarity and acceptance.
The participants will also develop an understanding of how play can lead to art making while learning new skills in the areas of dance, visual arts and music.
A the presentation session with Project team will be held on Saturday 28th of April at 11 am at Siteworks, 33 Saxon Street, Brunswick, in Workroom 2.
